Getting Married on the Washington State Ferry

Kristin & Derek had one of the most uniquely intimate weddings I ever had the honor to be a part of. They got married on the washington state ferry as it crossed from Seattle to Bainbridge island. Surrounded by their closest friends & family and a bunch of ferry passengers, they exchanged "I do's" at the front of the ship. Following the ceremony, we braved the sea spray for some portraits on the open air deck. I love how adventurous this bridal party was!
After we docked in seattle, a white vintage rolls royce picked us up to head to the reception. But first a quick detour to the world spice market below Pike Place Market where these two shared their first kiss.
Once we arrived at the reception, we were served the most amazing family style italian authentic feast. There were many heartfelt toasts and not a dry eye in the house. They closed their ceremony with their first dance.

Kristin & Derek's Ferry Wedding in Seattle
1. How did you guys meet? (You've told me the story before but I'd love to have it in your own words.)
I started writing for a gaming website and I received a congratulatory note on Twitter from Derek on the new job. He was a reader of the site! We started talking. After I moved back up to Seattle, he contacted me again and asked me out. The rest is history!
2. How did you get engaged?
We were on vacation in Amsterdam for my birthday. Soon after we arrived, and after a day of exploring, we returned to our B&B to relax. I started fidgeting and straightening the room up while Derek was trying to talk to me, but he managed to get my attention. I sat down next to him on the bed and he asked me to marry him right there. We had the rest of our vacation to be newly engaged and share the news with my family overseas.
3. What inspired you while planning your wedding?
Soft colors, romantic touches. I love succulents and wanted to incorporate unique textures into my bouquet! Since the ceremony was on a ferry with time and space restrictions, I wanted to make things semi-casual but fun.
4. What were some of your favorite wedding day details?
Wearing my great grandmother’s ring, my comfy TOMS, and beautiful bouquet.
5. Did you have any DIY details? If so, please describe some of your favorites
I made my veil and sash, our guestbook and cake topper. I had so much fun crafting the flowers on my veil! My dad helped perfect the petal assembly - it was special to share that with him.
6. What were some of your favorite moments from your wedding day?
Seeing all of our family and friends having fun. Seeing the groom for the first time.
7. What advice would you give future brides
Everything doesn’t need to be perfect - don’t stress over the tiny things on your big day. It flies by! Work in moments for just the two of you to be together; enjoy yourself and your day with your new partner in life.
