3 Reasons You Should Be Happy If Rain Crashes Your Wedding

I have two friends that I’ve known since kindergarten who ended up being high school sweethearts. Back up – they were also junior-high sweethearts. Overachievers. They won “most likely to get married” in the yearbook, and sure enough, they got engaged a few years after high school.
I’m not kidding when I say that she started planning her dream wedding in 8th grade. I remember sitting next to her in Biology when she told me that she wanted blush and gold tones. She was Pinterest’s poster child before Pinterest was even a thing.
And guess what? It rained. On her wedding day. On her 10-years-in-the-making wedding day.
In the middle of July.
In “sunny” California.
Not so golden after all.
This wasn’t a light drizzle, either. I’m talking flash flooding that shut-down half of the 91 freeway.
If you are from California, or if you know anything about California’s freeways, you know that the 91 is classified in the dictionary as a curse word. It is a congested mess at any given hour. So, introduce flash floods into the equation, and you’ve got a first-degree s***show.
My boyfriend and I – along with a handful of other guests – missed her ceremony due to the freeway shutdown.

Wait, wait, wait. That was dramatic. Yes, this really did happen, unfortunately. And yes, she briefly cried to her bridesmaids. Understandably. She certainly did not put rain on her guestlist. But, after reading this article, you’ll realize that scoreboard was more along the lines of:

They truly made the most of their rainy wedding day, and even with a few hiccups, it was more magical than she could have ever imagined.
Here are 3 reasons why you, too, should embrace your rainy wedding day:
#1 | the romance factor
It is not a coincidence that one of the most romantic movie scenes in one of the most romantic movies of all times – the Notebook— was filmed in the rain. Yeah, we knew that Allie and Noah had enough chemistry to start a forest fire, but when that rain started to fall, it was almost as if we somehow had chemistry with them.
That’s what rain does, people. It is whimsical and dreamy and cozy and and and…. all the romantic synonyms.
Who cares if your hair gets a bit tousled due to the weather?! Remember how sexy Allie looked? That’s you, girl.
Don’t think for a second that you look like a wet dog.
That is a lie from the pit of hell.
You will be a glowing, dewy angel because, let’s be real, you won’t actually be drenched like Allie (until later in the night when you are buzzed and dancing in the rain – we will get to that later). Use the forecast as an opportunity to buy some cute, trendy umbrellas to keep you dry on your big day. You’ll be glad did… especially for:

Real quick, *disclaimer* – your photographer is not god.
You might’ve told your photographer that you have always dreamed of that open-field photo. Let’s be realistic here…You and your spouse will not be Ma and Pa kissing on Little House on the Prairie, with sunshine beaming on the wheat and on your faces. This is not in the cards.
What is in the cards is some better-than-average lighting! The rain has a way of softening up natural light, so you and your honey will “pop” even more in the photos. Rainy photos have such a “mood” to them— I promise, they will be to die for.
Not to mention, there are all kinds of creative photos that can happen with the rain! Purchase (or borrow) some bright red rainboots to throw on for that “lift my dress halfway” photo.
Christmas card photo? I think yes.
#3 | it’s a party!
Forget the rain and pop the champagne.
I am being 3,000% honest when I say that I did not intend for that to rhyme, but obviously there is a reason that it did – it should be every rainy bride’s motto.
In all seriousness, dancing in the rain is the best thing ever.
Whether you are under a large tent with the rain pattering on the top, or you decide to be adventurous and dance IN the downpour, the rain brings an exciting, lively vibe. Let loose and re-visit your childhood… when you danced in the rain while being fully aware of the fact that no, you are not waterproof and, no, you do not care.
The rain is nature’s happy tears to congratulate you. Nature likes to party, too, so just be thankful that the life-of-the-party decided to crash your wedding.
Who cares if your dress gets dirty? The stains will be a lifelong reminder that your wedding was the party of the century.
