WEDDING GUEST DRESS CODE: EXPLAINED. Because WTF is Garden Party Formal?

WEdding Guest dress Code: EXPLAINEd.

We all know the cardinal rule of wedding dress codes – don’t wear white.

Or ivory.

Or cream.

Or anything remotely close to Anne Hathaway’s beautiful porcelain skin color.

Just don’t even play with fire, sister.

But what about all the other rules?  What do all the dress codes really mean?  We are here to help you decode the dress codes! ☺

1. White Tie

Wedding Guest Dress Code

Chances are, you probably won’t ever be invited to a White Tie wedding, as it is not as common these days, most request formal wedding attire. But if you are… may the Lord be with you and your checkbook.  White Tie takes the cake as the most formal dress code, and it can be pretty overwhelming – but also very exciting to feel like absolute royalty for a night!

For ladies:

We are talkin’ the Oscars.  Okay, not an over-the-top Lady Gaga dress… but definitely an elegant, full-length evening dress or ball gown –  think Nicole Kidman.  That woman is timelessly elegant.  PS: if you haven’t caught on to this yet – short dresses are totally unacceptable for White Tie weddings!

Accessories may include statement pearls or gems, a small feminine clutch, and long gloves (optional).

For men:

An evening tailcoat, high-waisted trousers, a white piqué vest, a formal

white shirt, white bow tie, and black dress shoes (& if he wants to channel his inner Downtown Abbey – a silk top hat is perfectly welcomed)

2. BLACK TIE / FORMAL

Wedding Guest Dress Code

Not nearly as boujee as white tie, but still dressed to your nines!  Black tie / formal wedding guest attire is fairly common, but it shouldn’t be as stressful as a lot of people make them out to be.

For ladies:

If you are the type of girl who is always worried about feeling under-dressed, play it safe with a sophisticated floor length evening dress.  However, formal wedding attire for women means you can definitely get away with a chic cocktail dress!  Generally, for black tie weddings you’ll want to keep your dress at least to your knee, or just above it. You’ll also want to make sure that the fabric is quality fabric – or at least looks high quality.  This isn’t a time or place for a summery maxi dress just because it is floor-length!

For men:

A classic tuxedo! Typically, dark colored.  A matching tie or bowtie.  Shy away from anything that stands out too much.

⇨okay, but what the hell is Black Tie Optional

This one mainly applies to the men.  You have the option to be fully tuxed-up, or something one-step down, like a dark business suit.

Ladies, you might consider wearing a posh evening pantsuit if you don’t want to wear a dress.

3. SEMI-FORMAL / COCKTAIL / CASUAL

Wedding Guest Dress Code

PSA: If you see the word casual on a wedding invitation, just go ahead and do yourself a favor and replace it with semi-formal or cocktail attire.  Unless it is an extremely laid-back wedding between two of your hipster friends tying the knot on your local beach, wedding guest attire doesn’t ever really mean casual.  Always keep in mind that at the end of the day you are going to a semi formal wedding, so even casual means clean yourself up!

For ladies:

A tasteful cocktail dress or jumpsuit. Key word here – TASTEFUL. You are not going to the club honey, so please don’t even consider wearing that ratchet Vegas dress that you’ve had hanging in your closet since you turned 21!  Little black dresses are acceptable as long as your booty cheeks aren’t hanging or you’re about to have a Janet Jackson moment.  By all means though, feel free to wear something fun and colorful and shows a little more leg or cleavage. You can even get away with a stylish romper.  Just remind yourself that you are attending a wedding with lots of family around!

Have some fun with some statement accessories – like a statement clutch and jewelry.

For men:

A suit and tie or a sport coat.  This dress code allows for colors outside of black or a dark suit is navy/grey.  It also allows for mis-matched separates… so you can wear light grey pants with a navy sport coat, for example.  You can even get away with a nice button-up and dress pants.

Yes, this dress code allows much more freedom, but don’t get crazy and use Jim Carrey in Dumb and Dumber for your outfit inspo.  The bride and groom didn’t put clowns on the guest list.

4. THEMED

Wedding Guest Dress Code

It is not uncommon for an invitation to say something along the lines of “garden party formal” or “beach chic.”  Don’t freak out.  I know these dress codes sound ambiguous and obnoxious, but just follow the guidelines we set above, with a themed twist!

For garden party formal, for example, you’re still going to wear a classy, knee-length cocktail dress, but find a way to tie in the “garden” aspect – so, opt for a dress that is lighter in color (maybe blush pink) rather than a harsh black dress.  Or wear a long, satin dress with a floral print.  Or even just some soft pearls could do the trick with a garden party dress.  For you men, you’re still going to wear a tux, but instead of wearing a black tux with a black tie, opt for a gray tux with a periwinkle tie.

For beach chic, focus first on the chic.  Chic doesn’t mean a boring cotton sundress that you wear while you do the dishes at home.  Think something along the lines of an airy, chiffon midi dress with a boho vibe. For guys, light-khaki pants with a crisp white dress shirt.

Regardless of the dress code, don’t overthink it!  (Unless it is White Tie… then call up UK’s Parliament and ask to borrow some outfits).  Do your best to follow to the dress code, but don’t lose sleep over it.  Rule of thumb: It’s always better to be over-dressed than under-dressed.  But at the end of the day, the bride and groom invited you to their wedding because they want YOU there – not a perfectly put-together outfit!

What is Garden Party Formal?

Let's start by breaking down the term. "Garden Party Formal" is a dress code that combines elements of formal attire with a relaxed, outdoor vibe.

Think of it as a blend of elegance and comfort. It's about looking polished and put-together, but in a way that's suitable for an outdoor setting.

For women, this could mean a chic midi dress in a floral print. For men, a light-colored suit or blazer could be the ticket.

The key is to choose outfits that are stylish yet practical. After all, you'll be navigating grassy lawns and potentially uneven terrain.

So, while it's a step down from black tie, it's definitely a step up from casual. It's the perfect balance for a garden-themed wedding.

The Ladies' Guide to Garden Party Glam

Ladies, it's time to embrace the garden party spirit. This is your chance to play with colors, prints, and styles that you might not usually wear.

Remember, the key to nailing the garden party formal look is balance. You want to look elegant, but not overdressed.

Think light, airy fabrics like linen or cotton. These are perfect for an outdoor setting.

Dressing for the Occasion: Fabric and Style

When it comes to style, opt for dresses that are chic yet comfortable. A midi or maxi dress in a floral print is a classic choice.

You could also go for a stylish jumpsuit or a sophisticated skirt and blouse combo. The goal is to look polished but relaxed.

Remember, you'll be outdoors, so choose fabrics that are breathable and comfortable.

Color Me Beautiful: Choosing the Right Palette

Color-wise, think soft, pastel shades or vibrant floral prints. These are perfect for a garden setting.

Avoid dark, heavy colors. They can look out of place at a garden party.

Instead, embrace the opportunity to wear colors that reflect the joyous occasion.

Accessorize to Maximize: The Finishing Touches

Accessories can make or break your outfit. A statement necklace or a pair of elegant earrings can elevate your look.

Don't forget about your footwear. Choose shoes that are stylish yet practical.

Lastly, consider a stylish hat or fascinator. It's not only chic but also provides some much-needed shade.

The Gents' Roadmap to Refined Rustic

Gents, don't feel left out. Garden party formal is your chance to show off your sartorial skills.

The key is to strike a balance between formal and casual. You want to look sharp, but not stuffy.

Think lightweight suits, stylish blazers, and crisp linen shirts.

Suit Up, But Make It Garden-Ready

A well-tailored suit in a light color is a great choice. Think beige, light grey, or even pastel shades.

If a full suit feels too formal, opt for a blazer and chinos combo. It's a classic look that never fails.

Remember, comfort is key. Choose fabrics that are breathable and comfortable for an outdoor setting.

From Ties to Shoes: Details that Define

When it comes to ties, opt for something fun and colorful. A floral print tie can add a playful touch to your outfit.

For shoes, loafers or brogues are a safe bet. They're stylish yet comfortable.

Don't forget about socks. They're a small detail that can make a big difference. Opt for a pair in a fun print or color.

The Role of Accessories: Not Just for Show

Accessories can elevate your look. A stylish watch or a pair of cufflinks can add a touch of elegance.

Consider a pocket square. It's a small detail that can make a big difference.

Lastly, don't forget about sunglasses. They're not only practical but also add a cool touch to your look.

The Do's and Don'ts of Garden Party Formal

Navigating the world of garden party formal can be tricky. But don't worry, we've got you covered.

Do consider the setting. A garden party means you'll be outdoors, so choose fabrics that are breathable and comfortable.

Don't forget about the weather. Check the forecast and plan your outfit accordingly. If it's going to be chilly, bring a stylish shawl or blazer.

Do accessorize. A statement necklace or a fun tie can elevate your look. But remember, less is more. You don't want your accessories to overshadow your outfit.

Don't be afraid to ask for clarification. If you're unsure about the dress code, reach out to the hosts. They'll appreciate your effort to respect their wishes.

Seasonal Sensations: Adapting to Weather and Location

Garden party formal isn't a one-size-fits-all dress code. It's influenced by the season and location of the event.

In warmer climates or summer months, opt for lighter fabrics like linen or cotton. These materials will keep you cool while still looking chic. Don't shy away from bright colors or floral prints, they're perfect for a sunny garden setting.

For cooler climates or fall and winter weddings, consider heavier fabrics like wool or velvet. Layering is key here. A stylish coat or a chic shawl can be both practical and fashionable. Stick to deeper, richer colors for these seasons.

Remember, the location plays a role too. A garden party in a rural setting might call for more casual attire, while an urban garden party could lean towards a more sophisticated look. Always consider the context when planning your outfit.

Inspiration Station: Real-Life Garden Party Formal Examples

Sometimes, the best way to understand a dress code is to see it in action. Let's take a look at some real-life examples of garden party formal attire.

For women, a knee-length floral dress paired with strappy sandals and a wide-brimmed hat is a classic choice. It's elegant, comfortable, and perfectly suited to an outdoor setting. Add some simple jewelry and a clutch, and you're good to go.

Men can opt for a light-colored suit, perhaps in beige or light grey. Pair it with a crisp white shirt, a pastel tie, and brown loafers. Don't forget a pocket square for that extra touch of class.

Remember, these are just examples. The key is to balance formality with comfort and to consider the setting and weather. Whether you're a fan of bold prints or prefer solid colors, there's a garden party formal look for you.

So, take these examples as a starting point, add your personal touch, and you'll be the best-dressed guest at the garden party.
