What to wear for engagement

Planning for your engagement photos and wondering what to wear? Well, you've landed in the right spot! with over a decade of experience photographing engagement sessions, I've got some tips to make sure you and your fiance look absolutely fabulous. Whether you're into boating, have a furry friend by your side, or just want that effortless, timeless vibe, let's dive into some outfit inspiration that'll make your engagement photos as joyful and romantic as your love story.

What to Wear for your Engagement Photos

Engagement Photoshoot Fit

  • Bring two coordinating outfits: one elevated + one casual for variety

  • Little white dress = always a yes: it feels bridal, timeless, and photographs beautifully

  • Bonus points for wedding colors: perfect for save-the-dates, guest books (yes, I design those 😉), or a canvas display at your wedding

  • Match without being matchy: choose 2–3 colors and weave them into both outfits for a cohesive, effortless look

Props for Engagement Photos

  • I’m always happy to incorporate meaningful props you bring along

  • To keep every session feeling unique and personal, I don’t provide props

  • The best props are things that actually feel like you

Engagement Session Prop Ideas

  • Champagne and flutes 🥂

  • A cozy blanket

  • Bouquet

  • Your pup (always welcome)

  • Sunglasses or a wide-brim hat

  • A simple picnic setup (bread, fruit, florals)

  • Ring box

  • Umbrellas for those classic PNW vibes

  • A meaningful heirloom like jewelry, a watch, or a scarf

  • A sign with your wedding date

  • Something that represents shared hobbies

  • Confetti petals

Bestie tip: If it feels like you, it’ll photograph beautifully. When in doubt, keep it simple — less is always more 🤍

Looking Gorgeous

I always recommend having your hair and makeup professionally done for your engagement session. It takes one more thing off your plate and lets you actually enjoy the experience. Camera-friendly makeup is key — it naturally photographs a bit lighter, so a slightly elevated application helps your features pop while still looking like you.

If you’re working with a stylist you love, amazing. If not, I’m happy to share trusted artist recommendations. Bonus: this is a great low-pressure trial run for your wedding-day look.

Your Engagement Ring

If possible, plan to have your ring cleaned the day of or the day before your session — extra sparkle always photographs beautifully. Also, take a quick peek at your nails. Neutral polish, a fresh manicure, or clean, chip-free nails make a big difference in close-up shots (and yes, there will be a few ring moments).

Think simple, timeless, and polished — your hands will thank you later.

Engagement Session Day-Of Checklist

Hair + Makeup

  • Schedule professional hair and makeup if possible

  • Go a touch more defined than everyday makeup (camera-friendly = slightly more polished)

  • Bring a few touch-up items: lip color, powder, hair pins or spray

The Ring 💍

  • Have your ring cleaned the day of or the day before

  • Pack a ring box just in case

  • Do a quick nail check: neutral polish, fresh manicure, or clean + chip-free nails

Final Bestie Tips

  • Drink water (glow > stress)

  • Trust the process — I’ll guide you the whole way

  • Show up ready to snuggle, laugh, and be yourselves 🤍
