What It’s Like to Get Married on the MV Skansonia – A Photographer’s Perspective

MV Skansonia Seattle Boat Wedding

Ahoy! I’m Becca!

As a wedding photographer who has shot multiple weddings aboard the MV Skansonia, I love how this floating venue combines Seattle’s maritime charm with stunning skyline views. There’s something truly magical about exchanging vows surrounded by shimmering water, gentle breezes, and the city’s iconic backdrop. Whether it’s the golden light on the open deck or the cozy warmth inside the boat’s vintage cabin, the Skansonia offers a unique setting that makes every wedding feel intimate, timeless, and unforgettable.

Why the MV Skansonia Is Magical

The MV Skansonia is a decommissioned ferry that’s been transformed into a one-of-a-kind wedding venue. It’s permanently docked on Lake Union, with panoramic views of downtown Seattle, Gas Works Park, and the Olympic mountains on a clear day.

It’s the perfect blend of nautical charm and romantic elegance. The open upper deck is ideal for portraits during golden hour, and the warm wood interior gives off that cozy boat cabin vibe — with just the right amount of vintage Seattle energy.

What I love most about the MV Skansonia:

  • Open-air deck for ceremonies or cocktail hour 🌅

  • Gorgeous skyline views — amazing for sunset portraits

  • Rain plan ready — cozy, intimate indoor space

  • Located near Gas Works Park for stunning pre-ceremony photos

  • Easy flow for guests, even with Seattle’s unpredictable weather

🛳️ Practical Info for Couples Planning a Wedding on the MV Skansonia

Having photographed over 100 weddings on the MV Skansonia and other waterfront venues, and as a preferred vendor for the Skansonia, we know this venue inside and out — from spring showers to sun-soaked summer evenings and crisp fall days.

Here’s what every couple should know to make the most of their day (and photos!):

  • Best time for portraits? We recommend doing your couple and bridal party portraits on the boat before the ceremony. That iconic Seattle skyline view from the bow is pure magic and a photographer’s dream. It’s the perfect time to soak in the scenery without any timeline pressure.

  • Indoor reception lighting: The cozy interior of the Skansonia is beautiful but tricky for photos — the natural light is limited, and the space is darker than most venues. That’s why we bring a full professional lighting setup to create those glowy, romantic vibes you want for your reception photos. If you’re thinking “natural light only,” we highly advise reconsidering — your reception photos deserve a seasoned pro who knows how to light the space just right.

  • Nearby photo locations: Want to mix things up with some shots outside the boat? No problem. We’ll chat about nearby favorites like Gas Works Park during your initial consultation, and we’ll build those into your personalized photography timeline. As a gift to all our couples, that timeline is yours to keep, no matter if you book us or not.

  • Second shooter? The MV Skansonia works wonderfully with a single photographer, so you can save your budget by skipping a second shooter and instead invest in luxury upgrades like an engagement session or a custom wedding album.

  • Golden hour photos included: Every package includes coverage during the golden hour — that dreamy hour before sunset where the light is soft, warm, and perfect for portraits.

  • Albums with panoramic spreads: We offer beautiful wedding albums that include panoramic spreads, ideal for showcasing the stunning views and wide shots unique to a boat wedding.

With all these details handled, you can relax and focus on your day — and know your photos will capture every unforgettable moment with care, skill, and style.

Photographer’s Tips for Weddings on the MV Skansonia

  • 🌅 Golden hour portraits: The light hits beautifully from the west — schedule 20–30 mins around sunset.

  • 💨 Wind on deck: Consider hairstyles and veils that won’t fly around too much.

  • 🌧️ Rain backup? You’re covered. The interior space is intimate, warm, and photographable.

  • 🕯️ Indoor lighting: The wooden tones can get dark — I bring soft lighting that preserves the cozy ambiance.
