Ahoy! I’m Becca!
As a seattle boat wedding photographer who has shot multiple weddings aboard the MV Skansonia, I love how this floating venue combines Seattle’s maritime charm with stunning skyline views. There’s something truly magical about exchanging vows surrounded by shimmering water, gentle breezes, and the city’s iconic backdrop. Whether it’s the golden light on the open deck or the cozy warmth inside the boat’s vintage cabin, the Skansonia offers a unique setting that makes every wedding feel intimate, timeless, and unforgettable.
Why the MV Skansonia Is Magical
The MV Skansonia is a decommissioned ferry that’s been transformed into a one-of-a-kind wedding venue. It’s permanently docked on Lake Union, with panoramic views of downtown Seattle, Gas Works Park, and the Olympic mountains on a clear day.
It’s the perfect blend of nautical charm and romantic elegance. The open upper deck is ideal for portraits during golden hour, and the warm wood interior gives off that cozy boat cabin vibe — with just the right amount of vintage Seattle energy.
What I love most about the MV Skansonia:
Open-air deck for ceremonies or cocktail hour 🌅
Gorgeous skyline views — amazing for sunset portraits
Rain plan ready — cozy, intimate indoor space
Located near Gas Works Park for stunning pre-ceremony photos
Easy flow for guests, even with Seattle’s unpredictable weather
Want to actually leave the dock? The Virginia V is Seattle's other historic boat venue, and she cruises Lake Union while you party. Here's my Virginia V wedding guide.
Getting Ready on the MV Skansonia
The Skansonia has two getting-ready spaces on board. The main suite is large and full of natural light, so your getting-ready photos come out bright and glowy. Your partner gets their own well-lit, beautifully decorated nautical room, which makes separate getting-ready and a first look easy. Nobody has to hide in a hallway, and nobody has to take an Uber in a wedding dress.
🛳️ Practical Info for Couples Planning a Wedding on the MV Skansonia
I've photographed over 100 weddings on the MV Skansonia and other waterfront venues, and as a Skansonia preferred vendor, I know this boat inside and out, from spring showers to sun-soaked summer evenings and crisp fall days. Here's what every couple should know to make the most of their day (and their photos):
Best time for portraits? Do your couple and wedding party portraits on the boat before the ceremony. The skyline view from the bow is pure magic, and you get to soak it in without any timeline pressure.
Indoor reception lighting: the cozy interior is beautiful but tricky for photos. Natural light is limited and the space is darker than most venues, so I bring a full professional lighting setup to create those glowy, romantic reception photos. If you're thinking "natural light only," I'd gently (but firmly) suggest reconsidering. Your reception photos deserve someone who knows how to light this space.
Nearby photo locations: want some shots off the boat? We'll talk about nearby favorites like Gas Works Park during your consultation and build them into your custom photography timeline. That timeline is yours to keep, whether you book with me or not.
Second shooter? The Skansonia works wonderfully with a single photographer, so you can skip the second shooter and put that budget toward an engagement session or a custom album.
Golden hour included: every collection includes coverage during golden hour, that dreamy hour before sunset when the light is soft, warm and perfect for portraits.
Albums with panoramic spreads: my wedding albums include panoramic spreads, which are ideal for the sweeping views and wide shots that make a boat wedding special.
With all of that handled, you can relax and focus on your day, knowing your photos are in experienced hands.
Photographer’s Tips for Weddings on the MV Skansonia
🌅 Golden hour portraits: The light hits beautifully from the west — schedule 20–30 mins around sunset.
💨 Wind on deck: Consider hairstyles and veils that won’t fly around too much.
🌧️ Rain backup? You’re covered. The interior space is intimate, warm, and photographable.
🕯️ Indoor lighting: The wooden tones can get dark — I bring soft lighting that preserves the cozy ambiance.
How Much Does an MV Skansonia Wedding Cost?
Short answer: more than a backyard, less than a downtown hotel, and way more fun than both. Here's how the budget breaks down for a Skansonia wedding, straight from the venue (as of fall 2026):
Venue rental: $3,000–$12,000 depending on the date. Summer weekends usually run $6,000 and up.
Minimum spend: $6,000–$20,000 depending on the date, with summer weekends starting around $12,000.
Off-season and weekday dates: the best deal on the boat, starting at $3,000 for the venue with a $6,000 minimum spend.
Guest count: up to 150 for a seated dinner or 200 standing. Capacity is the same indoors, so a rainy day doesn't shrink your guest list.
Catering and bar: Herban Feast is the in-house caterer. Dinner with an open bar averages about $200–$250 per person, depending on the packages you choose.
Photography: my full-day collections start at $6,000, and collections with my associate team start at $4,500.
Quick math: 120 guests at $200–$250 per person comes to about $24,000–$30,000 for food and drink, plus the venue fee.
Prices change, so always confirm with the venue for your date. On our consultation I'll help you figure out where your budget does the most good. (Hint: reception lighting is not the place to cut corners on this boat.)
MV Skansonia Parking & Getting There
The Skansonia is docked on the north shore of Lake Union at 205 NE Northlake Way, Seattle, a few minutes from Gas Works Park. Plug that address into your GPS and look for the signage out front.
Parking: very limited. There are 2 guaranteed spots and usually about 10 more close by. Save the guaranteed spots for grandparents or anyone who needs them.
Rideshare: the venue's top recommendation. Drivers use the same address and drop guests right out front.
Rental hours: a 10-hour rental with a 5-hour event, typically 6–11 pm. That leaves plenty of time to get ready on board and do portraits on the bow before guests arrive.
Fire-free venue: no open flames, which means no real candles and no sparkler exit. Go with LED candles and a glow-wand or bubble send-off instead. They photograph beautifully against the city lights.
Pro tip: put "take a rideshare" in bold on your wedding website. Guests who circle Wallingford for 20 minutes arrive grumpy, and grumpy guests make for grumpy candids.
